The global impact of plastics and their effects on marine fauna

By Odei Garcia Garin, from the University of Barcelona

February 8th, 12:30 - 13:30 in Askja N-129.

The seminar will explore the extensive and global implications of plastic pollution on marine fauna, encompassing physiological, behavioral, and ecological aspects. Geographically, the seminar will span various regions, including coastal areas, open oceans, and polar regions, providing a holistic perspective on the pervasive issue of plastic pollution. Emphasizing the urgency of addressing this environmental challenge, the seminar will underscore the need for collaborative international efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of plastics on marine life. Odei Garcia-Garin holds a PhD in Biodiversity. His PhD focused on the monitoring the impact of plastic pollution on marine fauna through remote sensing techniques, as well as the analysis of microplastics and plasticizers. He has actively contributed to research projects investigating plastics along the Mediterranean coasts, in Galapagos, Iceland, and Antarctica. He has published more than twenty scientific articles, with a particular focus on the anthropogenic impacts on marine mammals.
