On October 18th at 12:30 in N-129
Arnar Pálsson, Professor of Bioinformatics at the Institute of Life- and Environmental Sciences, University of Iceland, will present:
71st anniversary of the discovery of the double helix
In the spring of 1953 three papers where published in nature, including one with a model of a DNA helix that turned out to be right. The discovery of the DNA structure was a culmination of the efforts of many scientists, though they were not all addressing the same questions. The paper will describes these foundations of the discovery of the DNA helix, reflects on the historical accounts of the individuals involved, and the relationship between the chemical structure and the biological patterns of inheritance. To conclude, the paper turns to the present and the state of genetics post-helix and the lure of the idea of DNA as a destiny maker. The paper was published in Skírnir in the summer of 2024.
