Professor Rüdiger Kaufmann from Institute of Ecology, University of Innsbruck will present his research:
Colonization and succession of invertebrates on glacier forelands in the Alps
I will show a typical example of an Alpine glacier foreland with a 150 year chronosequence of community development which has become a focal site of the research of deglaciated terrain in the Central Alps done at Innsbruck University in Austria. An overview of the research topics of several groups in Innsbruck will be given. Colonization and succession patterns will be discussed in comparison to results from other geographic regions and from more island like situations such as the nunataks on Vatnajökull investigated by Ingimarsdottir et al. Then the formation and development of the food webs will be shown with special attention to the astonishingly high presence of predators in the initial communities even before the colonization by vascular plants.
